There have been a few times in my adult life that I have been hurt and wounded so deeply by another person that it took me a long, long time to forgive them. I tried to follow the steps I taught you in last week’s blog post but my painful memories simply would not go away. I knew that the forgiveness had not been accomplished in me yet.

So, I dug in my heels and kept praying and making the choice to forgive every time the thought of that person popped into my head. I knew that the problem was with Me not being able to release the pain and give the entire situation to God to deal with as He wanted. I know that God heard my first prayer when I tried to choose to forgive. It was my STUBBORN HEART that kept hanging on to the offense.

What I decided to do was write out this prayer which includes all of the elements you need to have for the forgiveness to be accomplished within your heart. Every morning during my quiet time, I would pray this prayer, OUT LOUD, as earnestly as I possibly could.

All during the day when I would have a negative thought of that person or a flashback memory of what was said or done; I would raise my hand like I was testifying in court and say out loud, “I choose to forgive_____”. If I had to say this 30 times a day, I did not give up. I was determined to obey God and forgive this person no matter how long it took. I am embarrassed to say that it took me a full year to accomplish forgiveness in my heart.

If you are struggling to forgive someone who hurt you deeply, I challenge you to start with this prayer. God knows that you are trying to do your part by renewing your Mind and having the Mind of Christ. He knows that it takes time to rewire your Brain because He created your brain. God will strengthen you until the forgiveness is complete. Hang in there!!!

Dear God,

I have been deeply hurt and wounded by ___________________ (insert the name of the person who wounded you). I make the choice to forgive them. I ask you to take the bitterness, resentment and unforgiveness out of my heart. I cancel their debt to repay me and release them into your hands. I surrender the right to be paid back and trust you to be the Righteous Judge in this situation. I ask you to forgive me in the way I have sinned against them and you by being bitter and resentful and dwelling on negative thoughts of them. I ask you to heal me where I have been wounded mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Take away the painful memories and emotions attached to this situation and heal me totally. Give me the right spirit and attitude toward them. Help me to renew my mind and think like Jesus would toward this person. I realize I cannot forgive by myself. You must accomplish this in me as I repeatedly make the choice to forgive over and over. Lord, I am trusting you to help me to truly forgive _______________ and help me to renew my mind and heal me completely. Also, Lord, I ask you to bless them.

This is how I accomplished forgiveness in my life and I know if you put these steps I have given you into action, it will work for you too.

My Red Hat Society group spent a few days at my Lake and Ministry House in October. We had a great time resting, relaxing, enjoying the view, cruising on the pontoon boat, napping in the hammock, and enjoying each others’ company.

Since we are a Christian Red Hat group, we also took this opportunity to have Bible study and prayer ministry. I am fortunate to have several ladies who are ministers in my club. Nellie Nelson did the majority of the teaching for this retreat.

Nellie and her husband, Gary, have been in ministry since 1986. They have served as Assistant Prison Chaplains in Wetumpka, Alabama for 6 years. They have also served as interim pastors of Grace Full Gospel Church. They are not currently pastoring a Church but they still do Christian ministry. Gary operates in the gifts of prophecy and helps. Nellie has the gift of teaching. Nellie was a registered nurse before she became a minister. She has always had a strong interest in Science. She combines her medical and scientific knowledge with her Christian knowledge to bring a very in-depth teaching. Her classes are for a deeper, more mature Christian audience.

Nellie’s topic for the Retreat was “Understanding Man.” Some of the highlights from her teaching were from the following scriptures:

Psalms 139: 14 I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvelous are they works.

Genesis 1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

Nellie, told us that in recent years, scientists have calculated that if the electronic energy and the hydrogen atoms of your body could be utilized, you could supply all of the electrical needs for a large, highly industrialized country for several days. The atoms in our body contain the potential energy of more than 11 million kilowatt hours per pound. We are truly unique and valuable creatures.

Nellie stressed how powerful our spoken words are and how we must guard every word we speak. Proverbs 18:21 Life and death are in the power of the tongue. When we combine our Faith and Imagination with our spoken Words, we can accomplish almost anything.

We all learned so much during this retreat. Studying God’s word is important. Praying for each other is important. But the fellowship time was also very important. These 3 elements must be included in every Christian retreat.
