The year that I turned 50 is when I decided to form a group of 20 ladies to join the Red Hat Society.  Most other chapters in the RHS are not Christian groups and you will see them out in public drinking, partying and gambling at casinos.  I decided that my Chapter would all be Christian women who knew how to have fun but also would be good ambassadors for Jesus Christ.

For those of you, who don’t know about the Red Hat Society, let me explain how I organized my group.  I invited 20 fine, Christian women to join together for a once a month activity or lunch or both.  The ladies over age 50 wear red hats and purple clothing.  The ladies under age 50 wear pink hats and lavender clothing.  This is strictly a “social club”.  Most of us ladies have already had a career, raised our children and done lots of community volunteer work.  We have decided that now it is time to start enjoying life and having a little fun.

Since one of the goals of my ministry is to help Christians build deeper relationships with other Christians, I knew the RHS would be a perfect way to get these relationships started.  To begin with, we all dress up in bright colors and wear gaudy, red hats and wear way too much jewelry.  These costumes make you feel silly and prepare you to laugh and have a great time.  God tells us in Proverbs 17:22 that “a merry heart doeth good like a medicine, but a broken spirit dryeth up the bones”.

God wants us to laugh, and be happy, and have a good time.  God knows how our brains function.  He knows that laughter releases chemicals called endorphins that produce feelings of pleasure in our brain.  Being in a happier emotional state will also make your brain function better. 

Not only will laughter cause you to be healthier emotionally but it also makes you physically healthier.  It truly can work like a medicine in your body.

Many Christians have read Dr. Don Colbert’s book entitled, Deadly Emotions.  He explains in detail how our negative emotions such as fear, anger, worry, bitterness and resentment weaken our immune system and allow sickness and disease to come into our physical body.  The reverse is also true.  When you let God heal you of these negative emotions and you change them to more positive emotions and thoughts, then God can start healing you of your physical disease.  Laughter truly does work like a medicine for our brain and body. 

I remind my Red Hat Ladies often how our monthly get-togethers benefit us.  Not only are we creating deeper friendships with other Christian ladies, but our laughter is making us physically healthier and emotionally happier.

Fish an excellent Brain food

When it comes to keeping your brain healthy, blueberries, strawberries and fish are at the top of the list.  Basically, what is good for the heart is also considered good for the Brain.  Also, it has been found that a diet full of green leafy vegetables, fruit, grains and lean meats is best for the brain.

The more balanced diet that is comprised of a rainbow of fruits and vegetables is the best to keep your brain healthy.

If you are thinking about going on the Adkins Diet or a Low Fat Diet, don’t.  Maintaining a balance in your diet is essential.  For instance, if you don’t get enough fat in your diet, you will go a little crazy and possibly begin having suicidal thoughts.

On the other end of the spectrum, if you have too much fat in your diet, you will clog up your arteries and end up with a heart attack.  The best oils to use for your body are Olive oil and Canola oil.  Remember, there are good fats and bad fats, so remember to make wise choices.

If you want to take a supplement that will maximize your Brain power, try Ginkgo Biloba.  The usual effective dose is 60-120 mg. twice a day.  If you are like me and do not eat a lot of fish, you can take Omega 3 Fish Oil daily.

It would be wise not to smoke or drink alcohol, because alcohol and nicotine are like toxins in the Brain.  It would also be good  to limit your Caffeine intake.

One of the most important things you can do for your Brain is one of the simplest.  Stay hydrated!  Drink lots of water all day long. Try to drink a minimum of two quarts.  This will keep your Brain functioning at its optimum level.

Most people underestimate the affect of diet and nutrition on the Brain. That tiny, 3 pound Brain of yours absorbs 40% or more of the nutrients we take in.  It uses 30% of the water we take in, 20% of the calories we consume and 20% of the oxygen we breathe.  The Bible tells us, “my people perish for lack of knowledge” (Hosea 4:6).  Well,… now you know.
